And last but not least, the Narrow Gauge Squad!
Tumblr media
Skarloey Fletcher
Age: 64 (at disappearance)
Height: 165 cm
Rheneas Fletcher
Age: 61 (at disappearance)
Height: 167 cm
Falcon "Sir Handel" Hughes
Age: 35
Height: 170 cm
Stuart "Peter Sam" Kerr
Age: 35
Height: 168 cm
A quartet from Wales that now runs the Blue Mountain Quarry. Decades ago the Fletcher brothers ran a narrow gauge line, called the Mid Sodor Railway alongside Duke England until Skarloey and Rheneas disappeared without a trace. Unable to run the railway by his own, Duke retired and returned home to Wales and told stories to the local children. Two of them were Falcon and Stuart, who were inspired to work on a railway themselves when they grow up. One day the young men could not find Duke anymore but still pursued their goals.
When the Fletcher brothers suddenly reappeared as pseudo-spririts and the news arrived the mainland, despite attempts to cover up this supernatural phenomenon, Falcon and Stuart, now calling themselves "Sir Handel" and "Peter Sam" left their workplace, the Talyllyn Railway to be transfered to Sodor.
Skarloey is a friendly elderly man, who enjoys his works just as much as he used to but he can also be very authoritarian and can send fear into other with his deep booming voice. His younger brother Rheneas had a reputation as being gallant thanks to his work ethic and looks after Peter Sam.
Sir Handel is pompous, grumpy and competitive and with how his engine can pull tiny express trains, his demeanor can be easily compared to Gordon, he also hates to be mistaken for a relative of James just for sharing the same last name.
Peter Sam is polite, optimistic and easy to please as he often does not need much to be happy. He is one of the few drivers who can handle trucks flawlessly. He is a bit gulliable and can take teasing a bit too literal. His engine is something he is very protective of and was very upset when its funnel got destroyed in an accident.

Duncan Barclay
Age: 29 cm
Height: 175 cm
A former factory worker with a foul mouth and a bad attitude. He doesn't have much appreciation for passangers and just wants to get his job done. Duncan doesn't really like to work to begin with and only gets along with Rusty, who can motivate him to get through the day without getting into any fights. He likes rock'n roll and jokingly liked to call his engine's occassional wobbeling that.
Rusty Hornsby
Age: 26
Height: 162 cm
A maintenance worker at the Blue Mountain Quarry. Rusty is seen in a good mood most of the time and loves to help others out with their skills. They not only can repair engines and rails but are also skilled at medical care in case someone did get injured. Rusty and and Duncan are very close to each others despite their opposite personalities. They were a bit cautious to work at a mountain at first because of an incident they had with a boulder once.
Luke Stuart
Age: 22
Height: 159 cm
A young man from Ireland that came to Sodor to work there but went into hiding for a while after he was involved in an incident, where he thought to have accidentily killed Victor. Luke hated himself for thinking of himself as a murderer and looked for shelter at the Blue Mountain Quarry, where Skarloey and the others helped to hide and protect him. He was more than relieved to finally learn Victor is alive and holds no ill-will towards Luke and is now an official Sodor resident, driving a tiny green narrow gauge engine. Luke is very shy and timid and also self-councious about how short he is. He used to get picked on a lot back in Ireland and now tries to get over his insecurities.

An idea for another Brenner Era Season
1. Haulage Capacity: When an old haulage wagon Skarloey used back in the early days is restored by the Earl, Peter Sam gets the chance to ride it and enjoys it. Trouble ensues when he forgets to mind his limits when he tries to help a broken-down Henry to the next station.
2. Edward and the Express: When Gordon fails, Edward is given the Express despite the big engine’s protests. Edward tries his best, but a faulty coupling might spoil his chances.
3. Alfie to the Rescue: Alfie feels left out when the rest of the Pack gets to help with a spring celebration. He gets his chance to shine when Thomas has an accident.
4. BoCo’s New Driver: BoCo gets a new driver, but he quickly proves to be rude and inexperienced, ending with the diesel being sent down to Brendam by mistake. The driver tries to improve for the better, but BoCo struggles to accept it.
5. Sticking it to Percy After an argument with Henry, Percy intentionally gives him a heavy train as a prank. This plan backfires when the small engine has to take the train himself after Henry is delayed.
6. Mavis and the Trolls Mavis tries to spook Toby with a story about trolls cleaning up the quarry at night. Toby winds up turning the prank against her when he takes Sir Topham Hatt on a late-night visit to collect some rocks for a garden.
7. May the Best Engine Win!: Thomas and Emily have a friendly competition to see who will get their work done quicker. Things seem neck-and-neck until one of Emily’s loads spills at a sharp bend.
8. Nia's Perfect Plan When Nia is given several jobs, she comes up with a plan to get it all done on time. When the plan starts to fall apart though, she stubbornly sticks to it.
9. Leave After the Bluebell!: The engines are excited when Stepney is due to visit the island again after a long overhaul and hold a welcome party for him. Stepney however winds up nearly missing his own party when he offers to cover Norman’s work after the diesel fails at Vicarstown.
"The Festive Season" DVD:
10. Hannah and the Avalanche: Hannah finds herself bored by the care Toby and Henrietta take during winter and decides to travel with Thomas instead for some excitement. She learns to be careful what she wishes for when Thomas accidentally brings snow down at Hackenbeck Tunnel, burying Hannah.
11. Can He Handel It?: Sir Handel starts taking heavier stone trains to finish his goods work earlier. This mixed with a blizzard spells disaster.
12. Gordon's Christmas Special Gordon is put in charge of a special Christmas train but will have to miss spending Christmas with his friends. This results in Gordon having a nasty argument with the other engines when he suggests he doesn't want to. Scotsman may have a way to make things right.
13. Spencer’s Snowslide: After Rebecca gets covered in snow at Crovan’s Gate, Spencer teases her insufferably. He eats his own words when he slides into a blockage at a tunnel.
14: Coal Competition: Max and Monty compete to deliver the most coal one winter. This leads to an embarrassing accident with Trevor and his cart when Monty doesn’t watch where he is going.
Back to normal episodes:
15: Norman Mixes it Up: Norman tries to prove he is more than his faulty engine through helping out the other engines with their work. He winds up accidently having to do several jobs at once, leading to him pulling one of the strangest mixed trains the Island’s ever seen.
16: Bad to the BoCo: Jealous of all the praise BoCo receives, Diesel challenges the big diesel to a strength competition. BoCo is reluctant to take part but does so accidentally when he accidentally takes the train Diesel put together for the competition…with Diesel still at the other end!
17: Bulgy and the Twins: While helping out around Edward’s branchline, Bulgy tries to cause trouble for the engines. He soon runs afoul of Bill and Ben, who trick him into trying to appease a transportation inspector.
18: Holding Your Buffers: Stanley assumes the famous Stepney is used to being pampered on the mainland and tries to give him the same on Sodor, unaware Stepney is annoyed with his overbearingness and losing the chance to do real work again. Things come to a head when Stanley tries to take a passenger train for a delayed Stepney.
19: Read All About It: Frank, the Small Railway’s new diesel, feels left out after learning that the other engines were in a book and accidently hits the back of the shed in anger. He redeems himself when Rex has steaming issues, and Frank comes to the rescue.
20: Rosie’s Passengers: Rosie is asked to cover for Thomas, but her overeagerness leads to her accidentally beating Percy to the junction and she winds up going to Knapford Harbor by mistake.
"Summer at the Seaside" DVD
21: Terri-ing Them Apart: A new engine named Terri, and her snarky brake van Clarice, arrive to help Ryan and Daisy on the Harwick Branchline. After a near miss, Ryan mistakes Terri’s generally nervous nature for her being afraid of him and he tries to make amends, which only stresses Terri out more.
22: Only I in Team: Frank grumbles about having to clean up after the other small engines. He winds up being truer than he thinks when a drought leads to the steam engines being taken out of service, leaving Frank to handle the railway by himself.
23: Terri and the Trucks: Terri’s timid nature makes her an easy target for the troublesome ballast trucks. The Scottish Twins give her advice to keep the trucks in line, but she overestimates the effectiveness of their methods, leading to a tense struggle up Gordon’s Hill.
24: Clarice and James: Clarice is rather impulsive and enjoys picking a fight. This leads to chaos when James has to take over one of Terri’s trains, and Clarice decides to taunt the red engine. The two's bickering soon leads to trouble.
25: Perfect Porter: When Porter covers for Philip at Tidmouth, he decides to rearrange the shunting arrangements to be closer to what he thinks is perfect. This leads to chaos when the other engines can’t make sense of the new organization system.
26: Skiff and the Dolphins: Skiff discovers a group of dolphins living around Arlesburgh. However, when some hunters try to illegally catch them, Skiff tries to save them.

Suddenly in the mood to talk about my Skarloey Railway relationship headcanons, so here they are! (This ties into my previous post on engine relationships, so please read that if anything seems confusing!)
-Skarloey is the Eldest. Rheneas and Duke are his brothers (Rheneas being his brother, Duke being his sworn brother/brother-in-arms, but to engines, the difference is often negligable). The other six engines, collectively, are his younger brothers, with Ivo Hugh and Fred being the youngest. Thus, he feels a lot of responsibility towards all of them. "Eldest" is often used as a title of respect/great endearment.
-Skarloey takes a lot of care in teaching Sir Handel the ropes. Sir Handel is the eldest of the younger brothers, meaning that he'll take over when Skarloey, Rheneas, and Duke finally run out of puff. Unlike Duke, who tends to coddle Sir Handel and Peter Sam somewhat, Skarloey and Sir Handel have a firm older brother/younger brother bond, and Sir Handel has never lost his respect for Skarloey. In fact, when he has a problem, he's more likely to go to Skarloey than Duke--he still cares about his granpuff very much, but he's not a glossy-painted new build anymore and Duke still treats him like that sometimes because he missed out on how much Sir Handel has matured over the years.
-Interestingly, Skarloey and Rheneas tend to go to Duke with problems or issues that they can't talk about with each other. Some of these things involve moments during the war, some involve hidden regrets... While the two brothers love each other dearly, there's certain things that are impossible to express, such as Rheneas feeling like he owes Skarloey a debt that he can never repay and Skarloey feeling like he has failed Rheneas in certain ways. Duke respects both of his new brothers-in-arms very much and appreciates the level of trust that they put in him. He also has to admit that it's kind of nice to be taken care of; the SR is run remarkably well, and they care for his well-being as more than a tool. He doesn't have to deal with a poorly-managed railway and trying to protect his granchuffs and all of that. He can lay his own burdens aside, and both Skarloey and Rheneas are more than happy to lend him a listening ear in turn.
-Much like Sir Handel, Duncan tends to get along best with Skarloey from an older/younger brother standpoint. He respects Skarloey a lot, and appreciates his "teaching style" over Rheneas, who tends to give lectures.
-Also interestingly, Rusty finds that they get along particularly well with Rheneas. Their personalities tend to be rather complementary, and Rusty can see just how much Rheneas cares for all of them and the railway as a whole beneath his sometimes-stern-yet-often-cheerful exterior. Rheneas shows Rusty all of the most beautiful, hidden-away spots on the line, and Rusty relishes in it.
-Peter Sam is close with all three of the older engines. He's started forming a mentor/mentee relationship with Ivo Hugh, who seems eager to learn.
-Sir Handel and Duncan have a rivals to friends relationship. They often bicker and clash, but over the years, the edges have smoothed out, and they have a friendly rivalry going. They push each other to do and be better, all while trading good-natured jabs.
-Sir Handel and Peter Sam are partners, as are Rusty and Duncan. Peter Sam and Rusty are very good at being the grounding and comforting presences that their partners need, although they aren't above telling them off if they're being ridiculous. The older engines love to see it and get a good laugh out of the younger engines' antics.

Traintober | Day 4 - Devious
Green Arrow finds that Diesel likes having him around to listen to him, especially since he's mute and can't divulge his secrets. But what will happen when Arrow regains his voice? Takes place during Young Iron - Green with Envy, when Green Arrow has his voicebox stolen.
Tumblr media
~~~
“Why hello there new engine!”
Green Arrow nervously looked around to find a black Class 08 leering at him. Said Class 08 was completely black, unlike the usual members of his class who had yellow hazard stripes. He frowned and narrowed his eyes in response.
“No need for that look, I’m just trying to be friendly!” The Diesel grinned but Green Arrow didn’t believe him.
The V2 was aware of this certain Class 08’s reputation in the Railway Series books and stared at him in disbelief.
“Oh right, you’re mute,” the Diesel suddenly realised and Arrow began scowling at him. “Apologises, apologies I meant no offence.”
Green Arrow simply hissed steam and hurried off in a cloud of steam, his displeasure evident.
Not dissuaded, the Class 08 quickly sped after him.
“Ah I’ve upset you,” Diesel quickly lamented. “A deep shame, I was insensitive, allow me to introduce myself, I am Diesel.”
Green Arrow snorted and rolled his eyes in response. To his surprise the Class 08 was not offended.
“I like being called just Diesel, it’s better than just having a number,” Diesel proudly exclaimed but Green Arrow looked doubtful. “We all can’t be named after companies like you are friend.”
Arrow decided to ignore the Class 08 as he made his way to his next job yet still Diesel insisted on following him.
“I’ve seen how the others treat you and I think it’s terrible, just terrible,” The Class 08 lamented. “A fine standing engine such as yourself being subjected to such discrimination.”
More than anything Green Arrow wanted to tell the Diesel to back off but his lack of voice made that hard. He was however able to wheeshed steam in the Diesel’s face and sped up down the line.
The Diesel shouted at him but he did not hear him as he put as much distance between the both of them.
~~~
Over the next few months, the diesel continuously approached him whenever he saw him. Green Arrow didn’t really understand but Diesel seemed to find some sort of comfort in just talking to him while he rolled around or moved to jobs. He seemed to look forward to or even crave having someone to complain to.
Maybe he wanted company, maybe he was genuinely trying to be a friend but Green Arrow didn’t have the ability to tell him to go away for the longest time.
On the plus side, Diesel gave him an insight into how the other engines interacted. How Diesel often spied James and Edward behind the sheds when they both had spare time. How Gordon liked to sneak out to the Docks to talk to the massive cruise ships that came by. Or how Henry liked to spend time with Peter Sam whenever he was near Sodor's Narrow Gauge Railway.
He was learning a lot from the Diesel and he didn’t have to prompt or try to provoke a single word out of him.
Maybe that was why he continued to be mute around the Diesel, even when his voice box had been returned to him.
He didn’t want to spoil Diesel’s little exercises in talking to him, knowing that he found solace in the silent steam engine.
“Hello, Mr Arrow!” Came the voice of the small navy blue tank engine sat near cranky on the Docks. “It’s good to see you!”
He liked the Well Tank Engine. He wasn’t like any of the other engines on the island who held a grudge against him and seemed always happy to see Arrow. It was a nice reprieve when it felt like the entire island, bar Edward, was against him.
“I’ve forgotten your name sorry,” Green Arrow apologised to the little engine.
“That’s a’rite guv! Name’s Sonny!” The Tank engine grinned, not even offended by his forgetfulness.
“Sonny! Right! Hello to you too!” Green Arrow grinned back.
Sonny’s attention was caught by something behind him.
“Ay-O how goes it Diesel?!” Sonny greeted his friend but the Diesel didn’t answer.
Green Arrow could feel the glare of the Class 08 searing into his boiler as he came up beside him. The Diesel stopped, gave an annoyed ‘humph’ and sped off leaving a very confused Sonny.
“What was that about ay?” The Well Tank engine grunted confused.
Green Arrow said nothing and only stared after the retreating Class 08.
~~~
"So you can talk now huh?" Diesel oiled at Arrow as he found the Class 08 near Harwick Station.
"Not a lot of people approve of me having my voice back," Green Arrow admitted to Diesel. "I figured you would be upset."
"Upset?" Diesel scoffed, feigning his boastful attitude. "Why would I be upset?"
"Because maybe you thought that you wouldn't have someone to listen to your grievances any more," Arrow pointed out and Diesel glared at him.
"You've probably gone and told all my secrets to all your steamie friends!" Diesel sneered and Arrow gave a snort.
"What friends? I don't have friends, you see how the others treat me," Green Arrow argued and Diesel looked thoughtful.
"I suppose that he true, hehe, guess I had nothing to worry about," Diesel piped up.
Diesel started to oil away but Arrow spoke up again.
"You can still talk to me if you want, you actually helped me get a gauge on everyone else on this island you know," he offered. "I appreciate that."
Diesel stared at him and then smirked.
"Two outcasts just hanging out," he oiled and Arrow smirked in return. "But I'm not your friend, Steamie. I just liked to complain at you because you couldn't respond."
"Perhaps, but still, the offer is there," Arrow stood firm.
Diesel stared at him then humphed before meandering away. Without another world.
A few weeks later, the Class 08 was back to complaining at Arrow as if nothing happened, and Arrow was glad for it knowing that he was making Diesel at least a little bit happier.
Chapter 7: Scottish Factory
Notes:
Okay, I don't know if I need to tag this but just a heads up that there is some animal cruelty in this chapter (portrayed in the wrong). If you can't handle that please skip to the second header (I'm still new to this website forgive me).
Christmas 1928
Tumblr media
Proteus took Duncan to a factory in Kilmarnock, Scotland. This was where he used to work before operating on the Skarloey Railway. Proteus shifted himself back into a humanoid.
“Do you remember this place?” peeped Proteus. His voice was a soothing whisper.
Duncan slammed his forehead in awe. “Why, yes!” he replied. “This is the Caledonia Works! Me old home!”
William wagged his tail. Sango giggled. Patrick caught his tongue stuck to an icicle.
Proteus led Duncan to the inside of the factory. The place was damp, dimly lit and bleak. Two 0-4-0WT/military working dog hybrids were inside - it was a prebuilt Duncan with his unnamed twin. The dogs had wheels fixed on their tall, muscular legs.
Duncan and his twin were industrial engines serving under the RAF; they were German shepherd/Irish wolfhound mixes. Thus, it explained why he was so tedious to work with: he was not a purebred nor a passenger train.
An engineer caught the train-dogs attacking each other. They lunged, batted, bit, and pawed at each other's throats. The abusive engineer spanked them with a crowbar. “You mangy mutts!” he yelled. “You never do anythin’ richt!” The dogs were left with wounds and scars.
Proteus comfortingly put his hand on present Duncan’s shoulder. The grumpy engine wasn’t typically emotional, but he couldn’t help breaking down in tears.
“It hurts, doesn’t it?” sulked Proteus.
“A-am not crying! I just got a speck in me own eye!” he lied.
“It’s okay,” shushed Proteus. “Let it all out.”
Sango, William, and Patrick were sobbing too. “Oh mister Proteus!” Sango meowed. “I know Duncan’s gwumpy, but nobody deserves to be treated like that! It’s so sad!”
Proteus shone his light on Sango. “How about we take him to a better Christmas, shall we?” The magic lamp engine wiped the magic cat’s tears away.
Skarloey Railway - 1958
Tumblr media
Proteus took Duncan to the first time he was sent to the Island of Sodor. He never fit in, for the railway was too tame, and the narrow-gauge engines too polite. There was Skarloey the Shiba Inu, Sir Handel the Great Dane, Rheneas the Pomeranian, Rusty the pony, and Peter Sam the collie. All tourist friendly, people-pleasing purebreds.
Nancy, a little girl who volunteered on the Skarloey Railway, had minor cynophobia. She was the guard’s daughter. She had to be introduced to the enginamals first before beginning to volunteer. Nancy was bitten by a dog on her hand in the past.
“Nancy,” called the guard. “Sweetie, come meet your new friend." She saw Duncan approaching her with a muzzle on his mouth and was very scared.
Duncan barked and bared his teeth. He shook the muzzle off, almost trampled the girl, and licked her face. A conductor yanked the German shepherd train by his scruff. “Woah boy!”
Nancy almost cried.
“Aw, it’s okay Nancy,” said the conductor. “He won’t bite.”
The girl petted the scraggly dog’s chest. He was so fluffy! Nancy learnt to cope with her fear. Soon she and Duncan would become good friends.
Over the years, Nancy shared her family’s holiday traditions with the narrow-gauge engines. She made paper crowns and popcorn strings. She decorated Christmas trees and attended Mass. The narrow-gauge engines were most delighted. And as she grew up, so did they in a way - rebuilt with their recognizable faces that the people all came to know and love.
Christmastime is here Happiness and cheer Fun for all that children call Their favorite time of year
Christmastime is here Families drawing near Oh, that we could always see Such spirit through the year
I started re-listening to the Sonic Frontiers soundtrack Stillness & Motion again and I genuinely can't help but associate some of the music with the SR engines (yes, despite the clear contrast in ... well, everything to do with them).
Undefeatable's lyrics make me think of Skarloey and Rheneas tirelessly working to keep their line alive; the opening lines "I'm hanging on to the other side, I won't give up 'til the end of me" remind me of Skarloey's damaged springs and Rheneas’ determination in the incidents which led to their overhauls. Find Your Flame is a song I now associate with Sir Handel and Peter Sam - I like to imagine it as a song they perhaps came up with to keep morale up, but the name and end verse were words of wisdom Duke once told them.
2-2 Heavenly Sky makes me imagine the little engines sitting outside and looking up at the night sky, full of twinkling stars. 3-3 Memory Will Tell feels like something I would associate with Rusty; it just sounds so friendly and ‘hard-working’, yet has this gorgeous melody about halfway in that reminds me of the gender-neutral pronouns he has in the early series of TVS.
365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
February 23rd - Spider-Man / Miles Morales
Miles Morales heralds from the alternate universe of Earth 1610 (also known as the ‘Ultimate Universe’).  In this universe, the radioactive spider who bestowed Peter Parker the powers of Spider-Man was intentionally engineered by Norman Osborn as part of a program to create super powered soldiers.  After Osborn was outed as the Green Goblin and incarcerated, his research facility was shuttered.  Professional thief, Aaron Johnson, snuck into the abandoned lab to pilfer any remaining equipment left behind.
The spider that had bitten Parker was still living in the facility and ended up sneaking into the bag Johnson used to haul away the equipment he stole. Later that night, the spider emerged from the bag and bit Johnson’s young nephew, Miles Morales.  The bite bestowing the young man incredible strength, agility, the capacity to cling to surfaces and an extrasensory ‘spider sense’ that warns him of danger.
Having discovered this awesome change in himself, Miles concluded that he did not wish to be a hero; he just wanted to be a normal kid.  Some months later, Spider-Man died battling an escaped Green Goblin. Miles arrived late to the scene.  Stricken with a great sense of grief that he had not done more to prevent Peter’s death, Miles decided to follow Parker's philosophy: with great power comes great responsibility.  As such, Mile chose to continue on Peter's legacy.
Becoming the new Spider-Man was not a seamless process.  Miles struggled, but managed to persevere.  He was offered assistance from a number of Peter Parker’s former allies, including Gwen Stacy and Peter’s Aunt May.  They offered Miles some of Peter’s equipment, including his web-shooters.  At the same time that Miles tried to live up to Peter’s legacy, he also wanted to be his own man, leading him to designing a new costume to distinguish him as a new and different friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.  Furthermore, Miles came to realize that he possessed powers that the original Spider-Man did not.  This includes the ability to build up bio-electricity and discharge it in a debilitating ‘venom blast’ from his hands.    He additionally found that he could alter the perceptions of those around him, creating a temporary type of camouflage that renders him invisible.
Miles met the 616 version of Peter Parker during a cross-dimensional adventure.  The two were later reunited during the Spider-Verse event.
After many adventures as Spider-Man, Miles found himself embroiled in the Secret Wars event, where all of the divergent realities began to incur onto and destroy one another.  Miles ended up stowing away on Reed Richards’ life-boat space craft that exited into the limbo between realities.  Making their way to the composite realm of Battleworld. Miles and Reed where able to convince The Molecule Man into helping them recreate reality.
The 1610 universe was destroyed and would not be regenerated.  Yet, in that Miles had shown such kindness to The Molecule Man, he decided to envelope Miles along with his friends and family into the newly established 616 reality.  Miles eventually grew accustomed to living in a different reality, mainly due to his personal life having remained virtually the same.  Miles and Peter Parker decided that there was more than enough room for there to be two Spider-Men. Miles continued on as a crime-fighter, ultimately joining a new iteration of The Avengers alongside fellow young heroes Nova (Sam Alexander) and Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan).
Following the second Superhero Civil War event, Miles, Nova and Ms. Marvel branched off from the Avengers and formed their own team along with Brawn and Viv Vision.  They called their new team The Champions and have continued on together throughout numerous adventures.
The hero first appeared in the pages of Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011).
Hey, would it be okay if you could share your Skarloey/Mid Sodor headcanons. I'm pretty interested in them. :)
Sure! I'm always down to share my headcanons!!
1. Skarloey- Despite being the oldest engine on Sodor, Skarloey is young at heart. In my human AU, he walks with a limp (due to one of his springs giving out, leaving Skarloey crooked), and has a cane. He likes to garden with his brother. Sleeps a lot.
2. Rheneas- In my human AU, Rheneas wears reading glasses, and often reads at night when the others are asleep. Along with reading, he loves cooking and gardening. He also likes to knit.
3. Sir Handel- Although Sir Handel can be prickly, he's become responsible with age. He's quiet skilled with the piano, never passing up an opportunity to play for others.
4. Peter Sam- He often hangs out with Rheneas, and the two knit together. A very cozy person, he loves a warm spot by the fire, and sweaters.
5. Rusty- A dedicated worker and friendly to all. Has a keen eye for his friends, and can notice when one of his friends is in pain or not feeling well.
6. Duncan- Very grumpy, but works hard. Tends to swear. Is the 2nd tallest member of the Skarloey Railway fleet. Listens to loud music.
7. Ivo Hugh- unruffled, very blunt (can be a bit harsh) but is well-meaning. The tallest member of the Skarloey Railway fleet. Loves to hike and explore. Acts like Luke's older brother.
8. Duke- A bit stern, but kind. Because of his age, he naps a lot. The grandpa of the group.
9. Luke- The youngest. Loves playing video games, especially with Ivo Hugh and the others. Loves deer, and nature.
A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Programming
Yesterday in the Discord, we had a fun little discussion on how the programming in Band Camp Boyfriend works, particularly for the sprites. I think it would be cool to post what was discussed here as well. Who knows, maybe it will pique someone’s interest in making their own visual novel!
(Btw, if you haven’t joined the Discord, you totally should because it is a very chill, fun, and friendly group. :))
Okay. So! Art being the one thing Alex and I cannot do, we commissioned Flora as our sprite artist and we worked with her on what expressions we wanted for each character. Then we can mix and match their eyes, eyebrows, mouths, and other effects (sweat, blush, etc.) for any kind of expression we want. I made hundreds of expressions, I don’t even want to know how many. Maybe I will count them if I feel like terrorizing myself.
Once you’ve exported your sprites, time to bring them into the game. We use Ren’py visual novel engine for BCB. There are folders for audio, gui (graphic user interface), images, all of the script files, and some other stuff. Each character gets their own little folder in images where their expressions live. Except Eugene. I didn’t feel like making a folder for him so I just dropped him into the animals folder.
There’s one text file called script.rpy, which is like the lifeblood of the game. It does not contain the actual story script, but rather countless lines of code that tells the actual story script where to pull certain assets from and place them on the screen when commanded to do so.
Once you have all that sorted, you can finally jump into the meat of the game and you basically just tell it what to do with basic commands. But if there is a single space out of place or a missing letter, the game will absolutely crash on you. Still, it’s pretty easy as far as programming goes!
There are a lot of things to take into consideration like scenes branching off and joining together, counting up the affinity for each choice, and true/false scenes which will occur depending on your previous actions (for example, Clark taking his shirt off Night 2 if he didn’t get Section of the Day on Night 1).
Finally, I’ll show you what a choice looks like...
If you look closely, you can see asking Peter about his muscles loses you affinity with Sam, while Peter’s affinity remains unchanged. But telling Peter to take marching band more seriously scores you affinity with both Sam AND Peter! :0
